For those looking to get away and visit a new and exciting city, it’s all too easy to get drawn into only searching abroad. Instead, travellers should perhaps turn their gaze closer to home and think about the great options that wait for us right here.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh

Scotland is one such option and boasts an incredible number of fantastic tourist destinations including some of the most famous cities in Europe. With this in mind, we take a look at the cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen and what they have to offer tourists looking for a holiday on their doorstep.

Edinburgh

Culturally, Edinburgh is one of the most exciting and vibrant cities anywhere in the world. It plays host to a huge variety of international arts festivals and has also managed to foster its own successful local music and arts scene. It’s also one of the most beautiful cities in the UK, as its location on extinct volcanoes and rocky terrain has resulted in a very unique layout and design.

Whether you’re visiting the iconic castle, wandering the streets of the Old Town or checking out the famous ‘Penguin Parade’ at Edinburgh Zoo, you’re sure to have a great time.

Glasgow

The biggest city in Scotland, Glasgow, is steeped in history and culture and has become one of the most important economic centres in the UK. Home to wonderful Victorian and Edwardian architecture and a newly rejuvenated city centre, Glasgow is a city that has managed to move into the modern era without losing its history along the way. It is also a city that is increasingly defined by its fantastic nightlife and music and arts scenes.

Aberdeen

Aberdeen has benefited from the increasing number of cheap flights UK operators are able to provide as more tourists take advantage of low cost airfares and journey to the edge of Scotland to visit the ‘oil capital of Europe.’

Though a relatively small city, it has been fortunate enough to reap the benefits of North Sea oil and the architecture and facilities in the city reflect this prosperity. The centre of the city is small enough to traverse on foot and this way you’ll see much of the city’s famous granite architecture. There are also a large number of famous whisky distilleries in the surrounding area many of which offer great tours of their premises.
